There’s a long tradition of independent brew houses in Pennsylvania. Some have gone on to international fame, while others have remained small, brewing each batch with loving care – just the way we like it. You could spend a month touring them all, but if you want our picks for the best Pennsylvania breweries, we suggest you start here.
At Happy Valley Brewing, they believe in balance. That means creating perfectly crafted brews full of subtle flavor and pairing them with rustic cuisine made with locally-sourced ingredients, all served up in the historic Klinger barn.
Elk Creek Café and Aleworks does it all: hearty food, rich ales, and live music featuring local and national acts. The brewery prides itself on its connection to the community, delivering a remarkable array of the best grub around thanks to local food partners and a love of creating well-balanced brews.
With nearly 20 years of serving fresh craft brews to the State College area under their belts, Otto’s knows a thing or two about taking care of the customer – something they do well at both their locations. Stop by the original location to enjoy a bite and a pint, and be sure to check out their collection of classic memorabilia from area entrepreneurs of the last 100 years.
For more than a decade, the artists at Roy Pitz have worked to bring beer enthusiasts the finest seasonal brews made from only the best locally sourced ingredients. Grab a pint on its own, or check out their menu for the specialty items expertly selected to pair with your favorite drink.
One of the newer brewpubs on our list, Short Bus Brew House offers a wide variety of ales, pilsners and small-batch brews, which makes it easy to find something you’ll love, regardless of your tastes. They have limited options and short hours (weekends and Fridays), but if you’re heading their way, it’s well worth your time to stop by.
